A series of mysterious murders and the near death of the Patrician of Ankh-Morpork baffle the officers of the City Watch. Clues lead them on a merry chase among the denizens of the city, including a revolutionary cell of golems seeking freedom. They also stumble across a sinister plot to install Corporal Nobbs as puppet king of the city. Commander Vimes uncovers the truth, but may be unable to bring the guilty to justice.
