Easy, having lost his job as a factory worker and needing money for his mortgage, takes on the job of finding Daphne, a missing woman. Daphne, escaping her true identity as Ruby Hanks and her incestuous relationship with her father, has been passing for white. Easy becomes the target for the police and for the man searching for Daphne, "the devil in a blue dress." Entering the underworld to unravel the truth, Easy becomes implicated in past crimes while a string of murders occurs.
