Nomes live in corners everywhere, or at least they used to until the corners began to disappear. Masklin and his group number only ten, and he feels they have outlived all the corners Outside. He finally convinces the other nomes to follow him on a truckride to the store "Arnold Bros. (est. 1905)." Inside they meet another community of four-inch gnomes and feel they've found safety only to discover the Store is to be demolished in three weeks. Masklin has the most Outside experience so the Store gnomes turn to him for help.
