Terry Lenox, drawing on several evenings of drinks together, asks for a late-night favor that lands Marlowe in jail while Lenox winds up dead. Once out, Marlowe is hired by a writer's wife to keep her husband sober enough to finish his current book. While the job doesn't appeal to him, he keeps finding himself drawn back by it to Lenox's suicide and the brutal murder that drove him away from everything he loved.
