The Halloween Tree (1972) Ray Bradbury (Author) Joe Mugnaini (Illustrator)
Eight trick-or-treaters set out on Halloween, but they lose their leader, Pipkin. Carapace Clavicle Moundshround, climbing out from a leaf pile, offers to explain the origins of Halloween to them. He takes them on a broomstick-riding trip on a fantastic jouney. Moundshroud is a supernatural being who carries the boys into the past to witness how Halloween was experienced in other lands and times. They experience the rituals of the ancient Celts, Egyptians, and Mexicans. As in many Bradbury stories, this one has elements of horror, death and loss.
