The Virginian (1902) Owen Wister (Author)
In this classic first Western, the reader meets the nameless hero called The Virginian; the rustler, Trampas; and the schoolmarm, Molly Wood. It is this novel that introduces many devices that later become stereotypes in Westerns such as the gunfight and the afternoon ride with the hero, only in this classic one sees the literary use of the later stereotypes. Reprinted in 2001.
