When a man kicks Bjarni's dog, he kills him is banished from his village of Rafnglas for five years. Bjarni first sails to Dublin and then offers his services as a mercenary to a variety of Viking leaders, finally landing with Thorstein the Red. His duties take him around the western islands of Scotland where first he learns to fight and sail, but later becomes more reflective when he sees settlements established and treaties made. He rescues Angharad from her cousin and takes her with him back to Rafnglas where they make a home in a stirring, posthumously published work. (272 pages)
