The Wee Free Men (2003) Terry Pratchett (Author)
Award Winner
Part of a long line of shepherds, Tiffany lives on the Chalk. Originally protected by her now-deceased Granny, the Chalk is now overrun with monsters that kidnap people for the Fairy Queen. When Tiffany's brother Wentworth is kidnapped, she marches forth armed with a sheep diseases manual and an iron frying pan to find and bring him back home. Unbeknownst to Tiffany, she is as adept a witch as her Granny Aching, which serves her well on her quest. The Nac Mac Feegle, the six-inches-high, blue "wee free men," who specialize in drinking, stealing and fighting, accompany Tiffany in her search for the Fairy Queen. Tiffany's perseverance and determination help her overcome the Fairy Queen and as she returns home, she slams the door between the two worlds with such authority that it's unlikely to be opened anytime soon.
