This novel, a sequel to 2003's The Wee Free Men, takes place in Discworld, the setting of Pratchett's adult fantasy series. Gutsy young Tiffany Aching, who discovered in the previous book that she's destined to become a witch, as her grandmother was before her, is now 11 and apprenticed to a witch named Miss Level. She is also in danger. Due to her inexperience, she inadvertently allows her body to be possessed by a hiver, a type of demon that causes Tiffany to become impulsive, selfish, and dangerous. With the help of the Wee Free Men, the heroine struggles to save herself.
