The Hollow Kingdom (2003) Clare B. Dunkle (Author)
Award Winner
Orphans Kate and Emily arrive at Hallow Hill to live with their great aunts in The Lodge while their guardian remains in the manor house, surrounded by ancient legends that tell of young girls who disappear from the Hallow Hill area in the company of goblins. Kate and Emily explore the surrounding countryside and, while picnicking in a grove of old trees, feel as though they're being watched. Helping Kate and Emily find their way home one night, King Marak, head of the goblins, talks to Kate but she is repulsed by his distinctive, ugly goblin features. When Emily is missing and Kate thinks that Marak has stolen her, to save her sister she agrees to his proposal of marriage, though she doesn't relish living underground for the rest of her life. Kate soon learns that Marak is not the culprit in her sister's kidnapping in this author's first novel, also the first of a trilogy.
