How I Live Now (2004) Meg Rosoff (Author)
Award Winner
This tale of "Children Against the World at an Extreme Time in History," to quote teenaged narrator Daisy, begins when she leaves her home in New York City to visit an aunt and four cousins at their British country estate. Daisy develops a warm affection for her Aunt Penn and friendships with the cousins--Osbert, Edmond, Isaac, and Piper--who share an unusual closeness. While Aunt Penn is away on official business, England comes under attack; and the relationship between Edmond and Daisy deepens into love. The five resourceful cousins, despite their isolation and lack of electricity, fend for themselves until soldiers take over the estate and evict them. Daisy, separated from her lover and sent far away with Piper, gradually grows stronger, more protective of the young girl, and determined to reunite their family. Six years later when she sees Edmond again, the circumstances of war have changed them both and are the determining factor in the way they live now.
