The New Policeman (2005) Kate Thompson (Author)
Award Winner
Unlike many of his teenage friends, JJ Liddy is passionate about music--specifically, traditional Irish music. Like the generations before him in Kinvara, he is an excellent fiddler. The Liddys have been known to be so "mad for the music," in fact, that JJ learns his great-grandfather allegedly killed a priest over a prized flute. The policeman in the title is Garda Larry O'Dwyer, who is unreliable as an enforcer and can't quite remember why he became a policeman in the first place. O'Dwyer seems to appear and disappear throughout town without explanation. JJ and the townspeople of Kinvara are faced with another mystery: why does it appear that time is moving more quickly? There is no time for children to play, and adults are running late. Fed up, JJ's mother requests he give her time as a birthday present. JJ does not take this request seriously, until he finds himself in Tir na n'Og, the land of fairies and eternal youth, where time has also started to progress. JJ learns about this and more from a fairy named Aengus, then realizes he must discover how to fix the leak that has caused time to speed up in both Ireland and Tir na n'Og, how to return to Ireland, and the truth about his great-grandfather. Each chapter includes sheet music for Irish dance tunes.
