Award Winner
The Invention of Hugo Cabret: A Novel in Words and Pictures by author and illustrator Brian Selznick is a novel-sized picture book is set in the 1930s and tells the adventures of the orphan Hugo Cabret, who lives in a Paris train station maintaining the station's clocks. When Hugo's father, a clock maker, passed away, he was repairing a mechanical man that holds a pen. Twelve-year-old Hugo is convinced that, once fixed, the automaton will write a message from his father. Hugo hides in the train station to avoid his alcoholic uncle, and he steals mechanical parts from the station's wind-up toy shop to fix his automaton. Hugo eventually befriends the shop's elderly owner and his helper, a young girl named Isabelle. Isabelle and Hugo work to solve the mystery of the automaton and its connection to the identity of pioneer French filmmaker Georges Melies, who is believed dead. Sequential pencil drawings not only illustrate the story, but contribute to it by supplementing the narrative. Photographs of the period and stills from early films also accompany the text.
