Life Class (Barker, Pat) (2008) Pat Barker (Author)
Kit Neville, Paul Tarrant, and Elinor Brooke attend the Slade School for Fine Arts. Neville and Brooke are from privileged backgrounds; struggling student Paul Tarrant is not. After a brief affair with a married model, Paul turns his attention to Elinor and a serious relationship develops. When war with Germany breaks out, Paul goes to the front as an orderly and ambulance driver. Elinor continues with her painting and seems to close the war out. Paul is so changed by his experiences that he can no longer feel at home in London. He and Elinor now seem to occupy different worlds.
