The Turnaround (2008) George P. Pelecanos (Author)
Award Winner
The Turnaround is a mystery novel by George P. Pelecanos. The book begins in Washington, D.C. in 1972, when three teenagers, Alex Pappas, Billy Cachoris, and Pete Whitten head into the inner city looking to get into trouble. After shouting racial slurs at a group of African-American teenagers, a fight breaks out and Billy is killed while Alex is brutally beaten. Thirty-five years later, in 2007, Alex is running his family's diner, grieving for his son who was recently killed in Iraq. He is unexpectedly contacted by Charles Baker, the man who beat him. Another one of the men has recently gotten out of prison. It begins to seem as if there may be some hope of closure and reconciliation of the events that happened many years ago.
