The Draining Lake (2008) Arnaldur Indridason (Author) Bernard Scudder (Translator)
In The Draining Lake, the fourth book from Arnaldur Indridason to feature Icelandic detective Erlendur Sveinsson, a skeleton has been found in the bed of a lake that is quickly receding for an unknown reason. Sveinsson believes that the skeleton is tied to a Russian plot executed during the Cold War and begins looking into missing persons reports from that era. However, Sveinsson's own little brother disappeared around that time, and this case brings up painful memories that the detective thought he had repressed. These memories also serve to motivate Sveinsson to solve this case and bring peace to one family who has been wondering about their loved one for so long.
