479th Fighter Group: Riddle's Raiders (2009) John Stanaway (Author) Christopher Stephen Davey (Illustrator)
In 479th Fighter Group: Riddle's Raiders, John Stanaway chronicles the origins, training, deployment, and accomplishments of the elite World War II aerial combat unit. Created in October 1943, the 479th FG--equipped with P-38 aircraft--proved a serious opponent to the Luftwaffe, securing the U.S. Air Force's first German jet kill in 1944, winning the war's final victory in the air, and flying many significant missions in the interim. Noted for its skilled airmen, the fighting group counted 29 aces among its ranks and was awarded a Presidential Distinguished Unit Citation in 1944. Stanaway, official historian of the National P-38 Pilots' Association, is the author of two books on the P-38 Lightning. Chrisy Davey provides the illustrations in the volume.
