Born November 13, 1850, in Edinburgh, Scotland; died December 3, 1894, in Apia, Samoa; buried in Samoa; son of Thomas (a civil engineer) and Margaret Isabella (Balfour) Stevenson; married Fanny Van de Grift Osbourne, 1880; children: (stepchildren) Lloyd Osbourne, Isobel Strong. Education: Attended Edinburgh University, 1867-72; studied law in the office of Skene Edwards and Gordon, Edinburgh. Politics: Near the end of his life, Stevenson immersed himself in Pacific Island politics. Spending his last years in Samoa, Stevenson publicly criticized Western imperialism and advocated self-rule for the local natives. Religion: Church of Scotland, Presbyterian, by upbringing. Although extremely pious as a child, Stevenson announced that he was an agnostic when he was twenty-two years old. The prayers he wrote for family use at Vailima, however, clearly attest that in his later years he had reverted back to Christianity.
